WebFor anyone here, if you or your friend is using the W10 version to play MCC you have to go to the Windows Store, search for Master Chief Collection and hit update. For someone reason the Xbox app wasn't grabbing the update which means you and your friend (who's either on Steam or Xbox console) will have mistmatched versions.
